- Commends CIA for arresting band of robbers
The Lahore Police chief on Friday said he will request the Punjab government to introduce a piece of legislation for regular and continuous surveillance of those who have once landed into the jails but are free now.
“Proper documentation of criminals is direly needed since many of them do not relinquish heinous crimes they have been penalized for as has been witnessed in several robbery cases,” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Captain (r) Amin Wains said while talking to media at the Police Lines here.
He said that regular monitoring of criminals was necessary to curb street crime and he would make a formal request to the government for formation of a permanent mechanism in this respect.
The CCPO, on the occasion, commended the CIA team for busting a gang of 22 notorious robbers, and noticed that it was wanted for 60 robberies in Lahore and other cities, including Karachi.
The CIA party recovered over Rs 20 million cash, and jewellery, wrist watches, mobile phones, LCDs and laptops worth Rs 20 million from this band of robbers.
The CCPO said that the recovered amount and valuables would be handed to the original owners in the shortest span of time in a transparent way.
Reportedly, a CIA team, headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Omar Virk, traced the gang by gathering clues from the complainants and eventually arrested all of its members.
Investigators revealed that the gang was behind robberies in posh areas of Lahore including Defence, Model Town, Shadman, Muslim Town, Johar Town and Gulberg and leading businessmen, currency exchange dealers and retired army officers had been its victims. They said these robbers used to communicate through different subscriber identity module (SIM) cards.
Speaking about street crime and the Dolphin Police Force, the CCPO said that the induction of this force would be another feather in the cap of the Lahore Police as this force would be helpful in curbing street crime from the City.
He said personnel of the Dolphin Force would be allotted different beats and every cop would report about his performance on a daily basis. He was of the view that crime was a social issue and every citizen including media persons should play their role in helping curb this menace.
The CCPO further said that there was a need to have a strict check on people living on rent, arguing that criminals also used to rent places during criminal activities. DIG Operation Dr Haider Ashraf, SP CIA Omar Virk were also present on the occasion.
