LHC directs Punjab government to provide jobs to disabled persons

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed Punjab government to evolve policy within one month for providing jobs to disabled persons who meet the criteria.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah took up the case for hearing Tuesday.

Petitioner Hafiz Junaid Mehmood took the plea that he had passed the test and the interview with the Education Department Punjab in connection with the post of an educator. However, he had been informed that there was no policy in place to accommodate disabled persons. He said that it is constitutional obligation of the state to ensure people are not discriminated against on the basis of their disabilities.

The LHC adjourned the hearing after secretary schools education promised to look into the matter.

The court remarked that special importance is given to the disabled persons throughout the world, but in our country they are ignored. They asked why the government was not coming up with a policy in this regard.

The court directed the Punjab government to devise a policy within one month for providing jobs to the disabled persons who meet the required criteria.

The court remarked that if the policy is not formulated within one month, a fine will be imposed.
