New Year celebratory gunfire injures 17 in Karachi

At least 17 people were injured as a result of celebratory gunfire on New Year eve in parts of Karachi, while police in Faisalabad recovered over 2,000 bottles of liquor.

According to reports, celebratory gunfire was heard almost throughout Karachi after the clock ticked 12:00 even though Section-144 had been imposed.

Rescuers said they ferried 17 people with gunshot wounds to different hospitals from Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Lines Area, PIB Colony, Defence Housing Authority, Clifton, Saddar and Old City area.

One Umair was injured due to aerial firing in Ranchor Lines area. Another person namely Basit was hit by a stray bullet in Rexor Lines area. Similarly in Lyari’s Chakiwara area, Ateeq was hit by a bullet.

At least 12 people were injured due to celebratory gunfire in Defence, Gulshan Iqbal, Saddar and PIB areas. Two women were hit by stray bullets in Lines area.

Four of the injured persons were brought to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, two to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital while the rest were taken to other hospitals for medical aid.

Meanwhile, CIA police seized over 2,000 bottles of liquor in a raid on a factory in Amin Town area of Faisalabad late Thursday night. The liquor was brought to Faisalabad from other cities and the bottles were being re-packed when a police team raided the factory. The vehicle used in the smuggling was also impounded.

Police sources said the liquor was brought to Faisalabad for New Year eve celebrations. They said five bootleggers were arrested, while three of their accomplices managed to flee. Those arrested were identified as Sajid, Afzal, Pervaiz, Saufullah and Saleem.

In Lahore, four people were arrested for celebratory gunfire. According to police, these four people were on board a car and were arrested near Gulberg. They were driving the car in top gear through different areas while firing shots in the air to celebrate New Year. Police chased them down near Ichhra. A case has been lodged against them.
