Speaking during the National Assembly session on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government believes following merit for recruitment and promotions of civil servants.
The premier was responding to a point raised by NA opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah regarding alleged favouritism in promotion of senior civil servants. Shah wanted to know why the civil servants from Sindh were being ignored in the promotions of officers of BS 21 and BS 22.
PM Sharif said they have to deliver justice without any discrimination and never considered the angle of provincialism in these matters. He said he had not received any detail on the promotion board’s recommendations for promotion of civil servants. He assured the House and Shah that he will minutely look into the matter and discuss with him.
The premier said injustices, if found, will be addressed. In the past, several people were dropped because of their doubtful integrity and many of them were from Punjab, he said, adding that several things will have to be examined while promoting civil servants at higher level.
“We did not appoint the Public Service Commission chairman and the government has no role in the promotions of civil servants.”
Sharif said the current acting chairman of Federal Public Service Commission was appointed as a commission member by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government, however adding that the commission had representation from all the provinces.
“Performance, integrity and good repute of an officer were the real attributes that mattered.”
