Kidneys for sale while federation, provinces sleep: SC

The Supreme Court (SC) has expressed resentment over the fact that the federation, and the provinces, have failed to file a report on the prevention of illegal trade of kidneys and action against the culprits involved therein despite court orders, and ordered that the report be submitted within one month.

Justice Mian Saqib Nasir gave these remarks while presiding over a three-member bench of SC while hearing a suo motu notice case against illegal trade of kidneys on Wednesday.

“The heinous business of illegal sale and purchase of body organs is continuing. However, the federation and provinces have taken no steps on this count. Tell us why the reply has not been filed despite the court’s orders. What steps have been initiated by the government against this menace of the society?” he questioned.

The court expressed resentment over the lack of a reply by the federation and provinces in this connection. The federation and provinces sought more time to file the reply.

Additional Advocate General (AAG) Punjab told the court that the Punjab government has enacted an act to curb this heinous trade.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar remarked, “Enacting an act is not a big thing. Tell us why kidneys are sold and purchased and at what places, and what have you in this respect.”

The Punjab government told that the police had seized several accused of the crime, and some such centres have been taken into possession where kidney extraction processes were carried out. The government is taking several other steps and it initiates action when such reports are received.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar while giving one month’s time to the federation and provinces ordered that details of the steps taken to curb this inhuman trade, and action taken against the accused so far, be presented in the court.
