Govt, PTI timidly approaching thaw

  • PTI asks for enquiries pertaining to legality of 2013 elections, their transparency and independence and if the overall results of the election were true reflection of mandate given by the electorate
  • Information minister labels Khan biggest hurdle in formation of JC, says he is trying to influence ET decisions

During a press conference in the federal capital on Friday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan asserted that his party was entering a decisive phase so that the prepared memorandum of understanding (MoU) is signed between the two parties while sources told Pakistan Today that Khan has shown flexibility on the issue and the tiff over rigging will resolve soon.

Talking about the dialogue between PTI and the government, Khan said PTI leader Jahangir Tareen wrote a letter to Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to carry forward the stalled dialogue. Tareen, in the meanwhile, has said that he did not receive any email from Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, who claimed he responded to the PTI’s letter via email. “If the federal minister wishes to see me, I will welcome him.”

“This epistle is aimed at maintaining a favourable state of affairs that both the sides have so far been able to reach in the face of stalemate. We want this dialogue process to proceed, but I’m afraid the other side is trying to recede,” Khan told the press conference, alleging the nation was being “scammed by the government”.

AGREED UPON TORS:

Moreover, Khan told reporters that three proposed enquiries were agreed between the PTI and government negotiators.

The enquiries pertain to the legality of the 2013 elections, their transparency and independence and ask if the overall results of the election were true reflection of the mandate given by the electorate.

“Are these inquiries unjust? Are we asking for too much? I have a very strong reason to believe that a judicial probe will by no means hurt Pakistan, but rather help it improve.”

‘KHAN IS HURDLE IN JC’S FORMATION’:

On the other hand, addressing a press conference in the federal capital on Thursday, Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid alleged that PTI Chairman Imran Khan is the “biggest hurdle” in the formation of a judicial commission as he is trying to influence the decision of the election tribunal in his favour.

Rashid said that a request for recounting of votes was included in the PTI’s ToRs finalised by Khan but now the PTI chief is getting “scared” of votes’ recounting. He said that the election tribunal still has to give its final verdict.

There has been a conflict between what Khan says and what the commission report states, he said adding that the PTI chairman “only wanted to get the decision he desired”. He also said that Khan tried to mislead the nation but failed to do so.

“PTI chief has launched a media trial of the government. Khan is a fast bowler in cricket but he is a spin master when it comes to politics. We requested the PTI chairman to speak the truth but he murders it every day,” the minister said, adding that PTI candidate Hamid Khan has taken stay orders for at least 12 to 14 times in the case.
