- PTI chief blames Geo group for receiving foreign funding, demands audit of group’s accounts
- Says Geo News ‘B-team’ of PML-N government
Accusing Geo Television Network of receiving foreign funding against the country’s interest and defaming Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has demanded the government carry out an audit of Geo group’s finances and investigate into the personal assets of the group’s owner, his bank accounts, as well as the loan written off and alleged tax theft.
Addressing a press conference at his Bani Gala residence Saturday, Khan also demanded the Geo group apologise to him and the nation for launching a propaganda campaign against him and telecasting a programme against Ahl-e-Bait (AS).
The cricketer-turned-politician demanded that PEMRA should ensure that the entire media, including Geo, must ensure that the programmes are broadcasted in line with religious teachings.
Khan also quoted UK’s House of Lords’ report which according to him stated that Geo received Rs 1 billion from Britain while US State Department gave it millions of dollars to run its editorial policy according to their directions. He said that in return, the Geo group had assured promotion of US and UK’s agenda.
The PTI chief said no country could allow a private TV channel to run the agenda of foreign countries and try to influence country’s policies. He also alleged that the group was a defaulter of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and other state institutions.
Khan, terming Geo media house’s owner Mir Shakilur Rehman as ‘Pharaoh’, challenged him for an open debate.
The PTI chief also accused Geo of having become “B-team” of the Nawaz government with Mir Shakil controlling the government by its powerful media house. He alleged that Mir Shakil had made efforts to remove PEMRA chairman because he had told Senate’s body about Geo’s financial irregularities.
The PTI chief urged the nation to boycott Geo group for airing a controversial and offensive show in its morning program. He also snubbed a Geo News reporter who tried to interrupt his press conference.
