Senate thankful to Zardari for his services to the country

The lawmakers from the Upper House of parliament on Friday unanimously adopted a motion to express gratitude to President Asif Ali Zardari for his address to both Houses of parliament on June 10.

The motion was read out by Senate Deputy Chairman Sabir Ali Baloch which was unanimously adopted by treasury and opposition members.

Earlier, taking part in the debate, JUI-F Senator Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi lauded the role of the president in the passage of the 18th and 19th Amendments, which he said had provided more rights to the smaller provinces.

He said Zardari and his family had rendered sacrifices for the restoration of the democratic process in the country which could not be ignored.

Baloch said the president transferred his powers to parliament and thus restored the parliamentary form of governance system which had previously looked more like presidential.

Raza Rabbani of the Pakistan People’s Party said the president’s policy of reconciliation had helped to strengthen democratic institutions in the country which should be carried forward.

He said democracy and the constitution were still facing threats and the democratic parties should forge unity among their ranks to protect the democratic institutions.

Later, the House was prorogued for an indefinite period.
