SC to resume Memogate case hearing

The Supreme Court (SC) on Saturday said it will take up the hearing of the controversial Memogate case against former ambassador of Pakistan to the United States Hussain Haqqani on Monday.

A nine-member larger bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising other judges will hear the controversial Memogate case.

Earlier, during the last hearing, the SC had directed Secretary Khawaja Siddiq Akbar to provide fool-proof security to Hussain Haqqani upon his return to the country.

The SC had also expressed its displeasure over the interior secretary’s absence. The bench ordered the interior secretary to appear in court and give details about the steps taken for Haqqani’s return.

The interior secretary was also asked to talk to Haqqani regarding his arrival in Pakistan, his residence and his security concerns, and to hold talks with the government and law enforcement agencies on the matter.

The case was brought to light by Mansoor Ijaz, a US citizen of Pakistani origin, when he accused Haqqani of writing a memo to US Army chief Admiral Mike Mullen seeking the country’s help against a possible military coup in Pakistan.
