National Open for Quaid-e-Azam Cup Polo from today

The golden jubilee edition of Zong National Open Polo Championship for the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup will be played here from Wednesday, at Lahore polo club with six teams beaming with foreign players showcasing their talent.
This was stated by President, Lahore Polo Club, Abdul Haye Mehta at a news conference here on Monday at LPC. Also present were Niaz A Malik, Executive Director Strategy Corporate Sales Zong and Muhammad Usman representative of Corporate department Zong.
Mehta said it is a historic moment in Lahore Polo Club that the Golden Jubilee version of the most prestigious event of our polo calendar will see the participation of country’s most respected polo players.
“National polo championship incepted way back in 1963 will add more to the grandeur of our club besides serving as an effective medium to further popularize polo,” He said.
“First introduce as the El Effendi Cup was presented by Brig H M el Effendi”,he said. LPC chief said in 1977 this tournament was renamed as Quaid e Azam Gold cup on the direction of the Government of Pakistan”, he added.
Praising the role of Zong for the uplift of polo, LPC President said “Their role is tremendous as far as the development of polo is concerned because Zong has come forward to sponsor high goal tournaments for the past many years.”
Mehta urged the business houses to follow the example of Zong and patronage polo tournaments and the riding school of Lahore Polo club.
Niaz A Malik of sponsors said they are delighted to be a part of historic activity whose golden jubilee edition has its own importance being the oldest golf event of the country.
“We are playing our due role in national building and contributing in the creation of healthy society and it is matter of satisfaction and honour for us that we are associated with the LPC and sponsoring a high goal tournament,” he said .
Niaz said apart from sponsoring polo they are extending support to cricket and a number of other sports to engage the youth in healthy activities. “ Through our strategic partnership with LPC we plan to sponsor polo tournaments on regular basis in future as well,” said the Zong official. Colony Sugar is last year’s champion.
Colony Sugar is the defending champion of the event whose final will be played on March 17.
