KP NGOs protest killing of workers

Expressing concern over increasing violence against workers and volunteers of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the Civil Society Network on Thursday arranged protest gatherings in Peshawar and other major cities and towns across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
At Peshawar, members and volunteers of several NGO’s and civil society bodies assembled at Aman Park outside Cantt Railway Station, from where they proceeded in a procession. After marching along various roads, the protesters dispersed peacefully while chanting slogans against terrorism and for the return of peace.
Idrees Kamal, convener of Pakhtunkhwa Civil Societies Network and Aman Tehreek, said protest gatherings were also arranged in other cities. He condemned the latest killing in Swabi of seven people, including five female teachers and one female health worker. He said the Civil Societies’ Network had decided to come out on roads to protest the killing.
To a question, Kamal confirmed that almost all NGOs had suspended activities in Swabi and the workers and office-bearers were shifting to other areas. He said it was high time for rulers in and the international community to think of ways and means to not only ensure safety of NGO workers, but also combat trends of violence and terrorism.
