Army to join Karachi voter verification drive from Wednesday

The Defence Ministry on Tuesday approved a plan for military personnel to join door-to-door verification of 6.8 million voters in Karachi.
Army, Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) troops will be deployed in all districts of the city and will provide security to the electoral staff starting from Wednesday.
The door-to-door verification of voters in the city was ordered by the Supreme Court on complaints about irregularities in enrolment of about three million people.
According to the ministry, army and other forces will only be responsible for providing security to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) staff.
According to details, Karachi has been divided into four parts where military forces will assist the police in providing security to ECP personnel during verification.
Meanwhile, the ECP is finalising preparations for the verification process. Verification of voter lists will continue from January 10 through March 8.
Moreover, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will deliver printed electoral rolls for the verification process to the ECP by January 9. The fresh lists will include the names of those citizens who turned 18, the legal voting age, by December 15.
