‘Media can steer Pakistan out of the current crises’

Pakistan is currently facing various challenges and problems and the media should play a constructive role to pull the country out from this difficult situation.
Dr Thomas Ditt, head of press and cultural section of the German embassy, expressed these views while addressing a national media conference titled “Dissecting Pakistani media from a Free, Independent and Responsible Media (FIRM) perspective”, organized by Individualland Pakistan (ILP) in collaboration with Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) on Thursday.
Thomas said that Pakistan’s media was free and independent and should play a positive role. He also said that since the media was the fourth pillar of the state it needed to establish a system to ensure checks and balances.
Press Council Chairman Shafqat Abbassi said that compared to the situation a decade ago the media had greater freedom, which had not only resulted in its growth and development as an industry but had created a sense of responsibility among journalists and citizens. He said that the media had played a vital role for the development and restoration of democracy, and commended the work of ILP in highlighting the consumer’s perspective.
ILP Executive Director Gulmina Bilal Ahmad said that an informed citizenry or consumer base promoted a sense of responsibility among journalists.
FNF Resident Representative Olaf Kellerhoff said that a free, independent and responsible media was as important as informed consumers. He further added that FNF believed in individual freedom and responsibility and ILP was working to promote them.
