Legislation needed to protect people’s rights from State: Rabbani

The Parliament’s National Security Committee (PNSC) Chairman Raza Rabbani on Wednesday called for such counter-terrorism legislation which does not allow the state to undermine the fundamental rights of the citizens. The parliamentary body held an in-camera sitting under its chairman at the Parliament’s House, and resumed the debate on the issue of missing persons. It also finalised the draft of its recommendations on the issue. A source told Pakistan Today that during the meeting, the final review was made on the draft of recommendations on missing persons by various members of committee. After a detailed review, the committee gave approval to the finalised draft containing these recommendations; it also decided to ink the draft in its next meeting. During the sitting, Lord Alexander Charles Carlyle – a British lawyer and an expert on anti-terrorism laws – also attended the PCNS session, and gave a detailed briefing before the members.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Rabbani said the country needed such counter-terrorism legislation, which would not give the state the power to undermine the fundamental rights of the people.
