Prices of vegetable witness upward trend at Sunday bazaars

The prices of most of vegetables increased sharply at the city Sunday bazaars. Even prices of tomato witnessed an increase of Rs 60 which is almost 150 percent more than the last week’s rates. This week tomato was sold for Rs 100 per kg as compared to the previous week’s rate of Rs 40. According to the price lists of the Sunday bazaars, the prices of onion, potato, peas, black pepper and green chili witnessed a significant increase. This week potato was sold at Rs 42 against the previous week’s rate of Rs 34. Onion was sold for Rs 31 per kg as compared to the previous week when it was available for Rs 25 per kg. While the prices of peas and bitter gourd witnessed Rs 20 and Rs 10 per kg increase, respectively.
Peas were sold at Rs 80 against the last week’s rate of Rs 60 while bitter gourd was sold at Rs 30 with 50 percent increase against the last week’s rate when it was sold at Rs 20 per kg. The prices of black pepper also shot up and it sold at Rs 80 against the previous week’s rate of Rs 60. The prices of almost other vegetables remained stable while the rates of chicken witnessed a slight decrease. It was sold at Rs 152 against the pervious week’s rate of Rs 157. Garlic was sold at Rs 100 per kg, ginger at Rs 100 per kg, ladyfinger at Rs 26, colacassia (Arvi) for Rs 36, green chili for Rs 60, lemon for Rs 132 and cabbage was sold at Rs 50 per kg.
The prices of most of fruits remained stable. This Sunday apple was sold at Rs 100 per kg, apple (golden) at Rs 60 and banana at Rs 70 per dozen. However, the prices of pomegranate witnessed an increase of Rs 10 per kg and it was sold at Rs 90 against the previous week’s rate of Rs 80.
It was observed that a less number of people visited the bazaars. And those who were present there were surprised at the 150 per cent increase in the rate of tomato.
The vegetable stall holders were of the view that the price of tomato was increasing due to a high demand and less supply. They added that the high price had affected its sale.
