Parties required to file account statements by tomorrow

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked political parties to file duly audited consolidated statements of accounts for the year 2010-11 by Monday.
“This is with accordance to Article 13 of the Political Parties Order 2002, which states that every political party has to submit a statement of accounts to the ECP within 60 days of the end of each financial year,” an ECP official said.
The spokesman said that the statement of accounts should be accompanied by a certificate signed by the party leader stating that no funds from any prohibited source under the Political Parties Order were received by the party and the statement reflects the financial position of the party accurately.
According to the election laws, every parliamentarian has to submit their, their spouses and dependents assets and liabilities to the ECP in September every year.
The statements should be delivered to the ECP Secretary through a party office-bearer duly authorized by the party leader.
Under rule 11 of the Political Parties Rules, 2002, the statements received through post, fax, courier service or any other mode will not be entertained, the official added.
Prescribed printed forms are available free of cost in the EC Secretariat, Islamabad and in the offices of Provincial Election Commissioners of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Under the terms of the Political Party Order, a party which fails to submit its statement of accounts will not be eligible to obtain election symbol for contesting elections for the parliament and provincial assemblies.
