UN lauds Pak contribution to maintain peace across world

Greatly appreciating Pakistan continuous support to the world body in many difficult areas of activities, the UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki-moon said that Pakistan has made significant contribution to different areas of UN activities especially maintenance of global peace and security through its participation in UN Peace Keeping Operations as the largest contributor of personnel.
The Secretary General expressed these views while speaking at a well attended black-tie dinner hosted in his honour by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations to celebrate his unanimous re-election as Secretary General for the second term.
Lauding the role of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, the Secretary General said, “Ambassador Haroon you are a trusted friend of the United Nations, your unique personality and exceptional diplomatic skills has helped greatly to strengthen the vital partnership between the UN and Pakistan”.
Outlining his priorities for the second term, the Secretary General said that in line with the growing expectations from the UN, he would, inter alia, focus on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), sustainable development, climate change, and poverty alleviation. He said that no single country could solve global problems by itself. He added that there was a dire need to act collectively to address these issues since nothing was impossible if nations were united.
Recalling his visit to Pakistan last year to see personally the havoc wreaked by the unprecedented floods which had inundated most of the country, the Secretary General said that he was highly impressed by the courage, perseverance and resilience of the Pakistani people.
Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon, lauded the work done by the Secretary General during his first term. He added that due to his untiring efforts, the world body had become more effective and vibrant. The Permanent Representative presented the Secretary General a sculpture made from pieces of granite collected from various parts of the globe, symbolizing universal brotherhood, inclusiveness and multilateralism that underpin the UN charter.
President elect for the 66th General Assembly Session, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser; Permanent Representative of Egypt, Mr. Maged Abdelaziz; former US Permanent Representative to the UN Mr Zalmay Khalilzad; Permanent Representative of India, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri; Permanent Representative of Uganda, Mr. Ruhakana Rugunda; Under Secretary General for UN Peacekeeping, Alain Le Roy also paid rich tributes to Pakistan’s role in the United Nations. Pakistan’s contribution to the UN stood it in good stead in its bid for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council
