LHC annoyed over delay in reply on NAB DG’s working

division bench of the Lahore High Court expressing annoyance on the delay in filing reply on Wednesday, gave a last chance to the federal government and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to respond by Thursday (today) on a petition against appointment of Punjab NAB DG Rana Zahid Mehmood, who is still working despite expiry of his one year contract.
The bench comprising Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq and Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan was hearing the petition and applications moved by Shah Faisal Farooq through his counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique against NAB DG.
The court asked NAB prosecutor Bashir Ahmad and consultant Mian Muhammad Hanif Tahir to explain as to why Zahid was still working as NAB DG despite the fact that his one-year contract expired on April 21. The court asked NAB prosecutor as to why the reply had not been filed in this regard despite several court orders and reminders. The NAB prosecutor asked for three weeks time to file reply saying that reply was not ready yet. Petitioner counsel opposed the request pleading that the matter was pending for three months but the federal government and NAB were using delaying tactics regarding submission of the reply. Petitioner counsels said all the orders passed by Zahid after April 21 were illegal as his contract had expired. The NAB prosecutor claimed that NAB DG had allowed Zahid to keep on working in the office in ad-hoc capacity. Petitioner counsel opposed the argument terming it against the law. After hearing the arguments, the court granted last chance to file the reply until May 26 (today). Petitioner submitted that Zahid Mehmood, a former judge of the LHC, was appointed on contract as acting NAB DG violating rules and regulations after his removal from the judiciary following a Supreme Court verdict on a plea of the Sindh High Court Bar Association.
