Police say killers of Haqiqi leader identified, will be arrested soon

KARACHI – The Karachi police have reportedly identified the men involved in the killing of Akhter Hussain, the vice chairman of Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) Afaq Group, and his two aides, it was learnt on Saturday.
Hussain and his two aides were killed on Shaheed-e-Millat Road near Bahadurabad on April 12. A female passerby was also killed and a child injured when the assailants fired at the MQM-H men’s car.
A Karachi police official said the suspects were being searched for and would be arrested soon.
“A police mobile van was present in the surroundings when the incident took place and chased the assailants but they managed to escape,” he said.
The police official said that two attackers are residents of PIB Colony and three are from Bahadurabad, adding that arrangements for their arrest have been made and intelligence agencies are acquiring information about them.
“We have identified them and now the suspects are under observation. We are checking their contacts and they would be arrested soon,” he said. “We can’t say anything about their political affiliation.”
The police have the record of the motorcycles used in the incident and their owners have also been traced out.
The relatives and friends of the suspects are also being monitored.
Another prominent leader of the MQM-H Afaq Group and party chief Afaq Ahmed’s lawyer, Sohail Anjum was murdered last year in a similar manner at the same road where the party’s vice president and others were gunned down.
According to initial investigation, there are similarities between the two incidents as the murderers used the same strategy in both the incidents and the same kind of weapon.
“There is a possibility that the same group was involved in the two incidents. The police have collected all the evidence clues and are very close to solving the case”, sources said.
The murderers used 9mm pistols in both the attacks, The police found more than 29 bullet holes in the vehicle carrying the victims in the attack last year and 34 bullet holes in next one.
