PEF directors’ appointment challenged in LHC

LAHORE – A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court on Tuesday challenging the appointment of eight directors of the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) by the Punjab government.
The petition was filed by Muhammad & Ahmad, a public litigation firm. Petitioning Counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique stated that PEF was first established under Punjab Education Foundation Act 1991 but the act was abolished and replaced by Punjab Education Foundation Act 2004 and subsequently PEF was also dissolved, he added.
According to Section 5 of the new law, the petitioner submitted, a board comprising seven government and eight non-government directors would be constituted to run the affairs of the foundation. He alleged that the Punjab government through a notification dated March 18, 2011 appointed six government officers on seats reserved for non-government directors.
Contended that the said appointments were politically motivated and in violation of the constitution, he asked the court to declare the appointments illegal. Meanwhile, a civil miscellaneous was filed to stop the directors from working and suspend the notification of their appointment.
