Two killed, dozens hurt in third day of Afghan protests

KABUL/KANDAHAR – Two policemen were killed and more than 30 people were wounded in Kandahar during the third day of violent protests across Afghanistan against the burning of the Holy Quran by an American pastor as US President Barack Obama condemned the pastor’s action.
“The information I have is that two policemen have been killed and 20 others, including police, protesters and citizens, have been wounded,” Ahmad Wali Karzai, head of the Kandahar provincial council, said. “The desecration of any holy text, including the [Holy] Quran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry,” Obama said in a statement honouring those killed in protests against the incident.
Obama also reiterated his condemnation of the “outrageous” attacks by protesters as an affront to human decency and dignity. “No religion tolerates the slaughter and beheading of innocent people, and there is no justification for such a dishonourable and deplorable act,” he added. Afghan President Hamid Karzai had called for the US (US) Congress to condemn the incident.
