Asma tells lawyers not to indulge in politics

LAHORE – Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir has said lawyers should not indulge in politics at the cost of their own well being and welfare and solidarity of the lawyers’ community. Addressing the members of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) on the occasion of a reception she hosted in honour of the newly elected office bearers of the LHCBA here on Thursday, Asma reiterated that the legal fraternity must take a united stand for the welfare and well being of the community shunning all intra differences.
She said vowed to defeat every attempt on creating rift among the community and said the bars at every level would go hand in hand on all issues in the larger national interests and the community. Speaking on the National Judicial Policy, Asma said it has failed to yield positive results because many of its parts are marred by lacunas and anomalies, removal of which, she added, was essential to make the policy a complete success. She also dispelled the impression of rift among the lawyers on the issue of appointment of ad-hoc judges to the Superior Judiciary and made clear in the same breath that the lawyers would stand like a rock when the question of their respect and honour arose.
LHCBA President Asghir Ali Gill speaking on the occasion said he would take the whole bar along before making decision on any issue. He said service to the bar is his mission. Whether it is the question of price hike, unrest in the country or Raymond Davis, our decision would be with consensus and in the best interest of the country and the people, he said adding, never his personal will and likely would come in the way of unanimous decision of the lawyers. He vowed to purge the bar of politics and political interference in its affairs.
