LHC adjourns hearing of petition seeking Zardari’s disqualification

LAHORE – A full bench of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on petitions challenging President Asif Ali Zardari for holding dual offices. Now the bench headed by Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry will resume hearing on February 3. The bench was hearing petitions of Pakistan Lawyers Forum (PLF), Engineer Ghulam Jillani and Advocate Asif Mehmood Khan who seek disqualification of President Asif Ali Zardari for holding a political office of co-chairperson of PPP.
The petitioner contends that the president being the head of the state was constitutionally required to maintain an impartial, neutral and non-partisan posture to deal with any situation in the best national interest. He contends that Zardari is the head of a political party, and adopts on occasions, the ‘absolute posture’ of the party leader and serves party interests, which is contrary to the character of his constitutional office.
The petitioner also raised a finger at Zardari’s reputation, who, he says, was known as ‘Mr 10 percent’, which, he adds, brings to him an inherent disqualification to be elected as the president,.in terms of Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution. He prays to the court to declare Zardari disqualified to hold dual offices.
