Nawaz to Munter: sorry, can’t release Davis

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE – US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter on Saturday asked Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif to use ‘his good offices’ for the release of Raymond Davis, who gunned down two Pakistani citizens in Lahore two days ago.
In a telephone call to Nawaz, Munter requested him to play a role for the release of Davis because the latter was a US diplomat and enjoyed diplomatic immunity. Nawaz turned down Munter’s request, saying that the matter was in the court and only it would decide Davis’ fate.
He told the US envoy that the whole nation was in a state of shock and anger over the killings. Munter expressed his anguish over the incident. Yasir Habib adds from Lahore: On Saturday, the PML-N held an important meeting at Raiwind to discuss the Lahore incident. PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif chaired the meeting that was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, opposition leader Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Ishaq Dar and other senior PML-N leaders.
Sources said that Shahbaz briefed Nawaz about the progress on the matter, especially the death of an innocent passerby after he was run over by a US Consulate vehicle. The meeting decided not to give in to any foreign pressure and give any relaxation to the accused, the sources said.
A senior PML-N leader told Pakistan Today that the Punjab government believed that every Pakistani’s life was precious and those involved in taking lives of citizens would have to face the law.
