Punjab govt seeks judicial probe into governor’s killing

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday said his government had written a letter to the federal government seeking a judicial inquiry into the Governor Salmaan Taseer’s assassination. He said he hoped that the federal government would approach Islamabad High Court for formation of a commission.
He was talking to reporters after visiting an under-construction forensic lab near Thokar Niaz Beg. He said the family of Salman Taseer would be provided complete security. He said that he himself had gone to the Polyclinic Hospital and expressed his condolences to the PPP leadership there. He said Nawaz Sharif had given a national agenda to the federal government to ‘mitigating common man’s sufferings’.
He said that there could no greater service to the nation than the elimination of corruption, strengthening of democratic system, national solidarity and resolving public problems. The Punjab CM said PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif did not want any public office and has presented the agenda in ‘the national interest’.
He said that it was unfortunate that the people who got their loans written off on political basis were still enjoying palatial houses, luxurious cars and owned factories which he said was a joke with the nation.
He said that in his meeting with the prime minister the latter had assured him that the five-days-a-week gas supply to the Punjab province would resume soon but he regretted that the promise could not be materialised. He said that gas outages in Punjab were wreaking havoc on the industry rendering thousands of workers jobless.
