Pakistan, China to name 2011 as ‘year of friendship’

ISLAMABAD – The Foreign Ministry approved a comprehensive plan on Friday to observe 2011 as a ‘year of friendship’ between Pakistan and China and both countries will celebrate the year at leadership, government, business and public level.
The year also marks the 16th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
According to the foreign office statement, a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Task Force including provincial representatives constituted by the prime minister to chart a befitting programme for celebrating the year was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting endorsed a comprehensive plan for year round activities during 2011 to mark the occasion and it was decided that the celebrations would be nation-wide involving all segments of the society.
The federal and provincial governments will organise a variety of events to mark the friendship year by exchanging the leadership level and parliamentary visits, youth and women delegations, art and cultural events, sporting contacts and business conferences.
Pakistan’s president and prime minister have addressed messages to the Chinese leadership and people to mark the commencement of the year of friendship.
A reception is also being organised jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad at the Pakistan-China Friendship Centre on January 01, 2011 to launch the commemorations.
