Holbrooke critically ill, FO perturbed

ISLAMABAD: Perturbed over the illness of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, the Foreign Ministry has directed the Pakistan Embassy in Washington to keep it posted about the US special envoy’s “critical” health condition.
“We are worried at the sudden illness of Ambassador Holbrooke not only because of his key role in this region, but also because of his sympathetic attitude towards Islamabad and especially his active involvement in flood-relief activities,” a Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity.
He said Holbrooke had been very close to Pakistan having contacts not only with the ruling circle, but also with the people from other walks of life, such as academicians and journalists. “He knows how to use all these contacts for the improvement of ties between Islamabad and Washington,” he said.
According to US media reports, Ambassador Holbrooke was in a critical condition at a Washington hospital after an emergency heart surgery. “Doctors at George Washington University Hospital completed the surgery on Saturday morning, and Holbrooke has been joined there by members of his family,” said a statement from the US State Department.
The statement did not provide further details. Holbrooke fell ill on Friday during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
