SC rejects report on Adiala inmates

ISLAMABAD: A three-member Supreme Court bench on Wednesday rejected a report by the attorney general, stating that the 11 missing prisoners of the Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi were not handed over to the intelligence agencies.
The bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was informed by Attorney General Moulvi Anwarul Haq that as per allegations, he contacted the concerned quarters, who informed him that these missing prisoners were not under the custody of the intelligence agencies.
The court, however, rejected his contention, observing that there was a contradiction between the statement by police and the AG’s report. The chief justice noted that it was stated in the Special Branch’s report, submitted during the last hearing, that these prisoners were picked up by the intelligence agencies from Adiala Jail.
The attorney general said he had talked to the concerned quarters and they also had expressed concern over the missing prisoners and assured that they were ready to cooperate with police for their recovery. Punjab Chief Secretary Nasir Mehmood Khosa submitted a daily report of police.
The chief justice observed that one should not be frightened if he was doing his job as per law. Meanwhile, the court directed the attorney general to further deliberate upon the issue and adjourned proceedings until Friday.
