20 MPs to appear in ECP today to defend fake degrees

ISLAMABAD
Twenty lawmakers accused of possessing fake or invalid educational degrees would appear before a special committee of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today (Monday) to defend their position.
Earlier, the ECP had set October 25 as the deadline for the completion of hearing of all cases, however, an Election Commission official said that it was impossible for the ECP to meet the deadline, as most of the cases were yet to be heard. He said the commission needed at least two more weeks to complete the process.
Talking to Pakistan Today, ECP focal person Afzal Khan said after Monday’s hearing, “final touches will be given to end this process”. He said the ECP was doing its level best to give at least three chances to the accused to appear before the committee, “that is why the process may takes some more days to complete”.
The focal person said of the 20 whose cases were to be heard on Monday, seven were from the National Assembly, eleven from the Punjab Assembly and one each from the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies.
They include former federal minister Yar Muhammad Rind, Mir Ahmed Khan Bugti, Sulman Mohsin, Dewan Ashiq Hussain, Mazhar Hayat and Hayyatullah Tareen.
