Marie Jones : Third woman to win nine CWG gold medals

Leisel Marie Jones became the only third woman to win nine gold medals in the Commonwealth Games history. The Australian swimmer achieved this feat by winning the women’s 100m Breaststroke at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Aquatics Complex, Talkatora Gardens on Friday, October 8. She has now won this event three times in a row at the Commonwealth Games. Australian Susie O’Neill and Petria Thomas are the other two women to have won nine or more gold medals in the Commonwealth Games.
Susie O’Neill holds the record of winning the highest number of medals by a female in Commonwealth Games. Madame Butterfly has won 10 gold and five silver medals in three Commonwealth Games between 1990 and 1998 while Petria Thomas has won nine gold, two silver and one bronze in three Commonwealth Games between 1994 and 2002.
Besides nine gold medals, Leisel Marie Jones has also won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games. Her only silver medal came in 50-m breaststroke in 2010 Commonwealth Games.
