Aseefa Bhutto launches anti-polio campaign

KARACHI - Pakistan's ambassador for Polio eradication Aseefa Bhutto Zardari re launched the anti-polio campaign in Sindh on Tuesday. Aseefa administered anti-polio vaccine drops to infants in Karachi and distributed gifts among the children. The campaign envisions immunizing four million children in the province. Till date, 34 million children have been vaccinated against polio across the country.
Meanwhile, two children died of measles in Ghotki and Shikarpur on Tuesday. The latest deaths mounted the death toll to 257 in Sindh. Special vaccination campaigns were launched in Shikarpur and Ghotki but many other cities of the province are still devoid of vaccination teams and kits. The measles campaign is scheduled to last till January 15
Karachi EDO Dr Imdadullah talking to reporters said that 534 teams had been constituted to operate in Karachi and 2.1 million children would be vaccinated in the city.
Measles is caused by the measles virus; a single-stranded, negative-sense enveloped RNA virus of the genus Morbillivirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. Humans are the natural hosts of the virus; no animal reservoirs are known to exist. This highly contagious virus is spread by coughing and sneezing via close personal contact or direct contact with secretions.
