ISLAMABAD - Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President and PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has said that former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani’s dismissal was wrong.
Talking to BBC News Tuesday, he defended Yousuf Raza Gilani against his dismissal by the Supreme Court.
He said the country’s judiciary was ‘too powerful’ and had, at times, overstepped its limits. Supreme Court could not terminate a law that is passed by the parliament, he said.
Aitzaz said no doubt the democracy was strengthened when chief justice of Pakistan took bold stand against General Pervez Musharraf but now some of the Supreme Court decisions were being questioned and people were pointing fingers at these decisions.
He said Pakistan Peoples’ Party would be able to form the government after the next elections as President Asif Ali Zardari had good experience of forming coalition governments.
He said Supreme Court decisions had blocked the way of martial law. There was a tense power struggle in Pakistan as the Supreme Court had forced out one prime minister and put the current one on notice.
