Contempt law: Govt to file review petition

ZARDARI 33

The government decided on Sunday, after consultations with legal and constitutional experts, to file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking review of the court order on contempt law.
According to monitoring sources, the decision was made after President Asif Ali Zardari held meetings with experts and leaders of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP).
Sources said, the legal experts are in process of developing ways to challenge the court order which struck down contempt law and resurrected the Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003.
The government has already admitted that the motive behind legislation of contempt law was to save Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf from being sacked by the court.
One of the government’s options includes instituting a petition against the verdict.
