DAMASCUS - The United States has allowed the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to start a covert operation in Syria where Bashar al-Assad’s regime has been facing a popular and armed uprising since March last year, media reports said on Thursday. According the American media, US President Barack Obama has also signed a secret document allowing the secret agency to carry out the operation. The reports said the CIA would help the opposition groups fighting against government forces. However, the White House refused to comment on the reports.
The Obama administration had earlier decided not to provide arms to Assad’s opponents as it would further aggravate the situation in Syria, adding that instead medical and communication support would be provided to the opposition.
