Gilani’s son elected to parliament

ABDUL QADIR

ISLAMABAD - The eldest son of former prime minister has been elected to parliament to replace his father, a month after he was dismissed by the Supreme Court for contempt.
Abdul Qadir Gilani won a by-election on Thursday in the family constituency in Multan, after Yousuf Raza Gilani was dismissed for refusing to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
State television said Gilani won 64,628 votes, comfortably beating his closest rival, Shaukat Bosan, an independent candidate who secured 60,532 votes.
Opposition parties led by the Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party had backed Bosan.
Television channels broadcast footage of the former prime minister Gilani being garlanded with roses and celebrating the victory.
His son said the people had spoken.
"The court dismissed my father and we came to the court of people. This court has announced its verdict in my favour and I am thankful to you," he told supporters.
Zardari congratulated Gilani junior, saying "it is the people and the people alone who pronounce the final verdict and are not afraid of overturning all other judgements".
The Supreme Court last week gave new Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf until July 25 to indicate whether he would write to the Swiss authorities to reopen the cases which were shelved in 2008 when Zardari became president.
It threatened Ashraf with "appropriate action under the constitution and the law" if he fails to comply, fuelling speculation that Zardari's Pakistan People's Party may be forced to call general elections later this year.
The allegations against Zardari date back to the 1990s, when he and his late wife, Benazir Bhutto, allegedly used Swiss banks to launder $12 million allegedly paid in bribes by companies seeking customs inspection contracts.

Last night all biased-anhors (KASHIF ABBASI/ ANSAR ABBASI / ASMA CHAUDARY / ETC ETC) were saying that results of NA-151seat will decide the course of next elections and where PPP is heading in future — Think they all have got their answers…. i don't know with what face they will come on TV tonight and appraise the PPP – "SHARAM BAGAR TUM KO NAHI ATTI….."

  3. Hamid Khan says:

The result just shows that Pakistan is Most F**U**C**K**E**D UP nation on face of this earth. That is why it is a failed state and has completely collapsed, Perhaps they deserve leaders like these scums who are drug lords of Multan drug Cartel

Only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches, so it appears that non-burger eating, no-pepsi sipping voters are not terribly impressed by terms like tsunami etc. Hence its about time that people who have started believing in their own propaganda should sit down and think hard why the PPP has not lost a single bye election even in Punjab despite the hostile provincial government. Multan should be an eye opener that despite all the negative propaganda a PTI, PML-N & JI suported candidate lost to the PPP. What will happen when all these parties have their own candidates separately contesting against the PPP. So wake up because just TV talk-shows and pop songs do not win elections.

    CJ has lost in Multan

This is ridiculous..This is supposed to be a democracy where people can choose their own leaders but sadly our people keep electing these blood sucking politicians. I guess Multan is happy with no electricity and the downfall of our economy.. or maybe they couldn't care less as to who "Rules" them anymore…
Allah helps those who help themselves… Pakistani is dead set on self destruction so it seems.
