Sheikh Rashid lands into detention at Houston

HOUSTON - US authorities detained former minister and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid for over five hours at Houston Airport on Wednesday night.
In reaction to Rashid’s illegal detention at the airport, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United State Sherry Rehman registered a strong protest on Thursday. Sherry called the incident “a violation of diplomatic ethics”, adding that it is unethical to detain any political leader for investigation at the airport. The US immigration authorities released Sheikh Rashid after the protest by the Pakistani ambassador. Sheikh Rashid told the media that the immigration staff took his two mobile phones into custody and copied all the data on the phones, including phone numbers. He said the staff had told him that the investigation was being carried out under directions from Washington. During the entire episode the staff dealt with him very politely, Sheikh Rashid added. He said that he had a multiple-entry US visa and that he would leave for Dubai after two days.

This clown should have stayed at home. He curses the US yet goes there. What a hypocrite. The man should be consigned to the dustbin of history.

  2. A Reader @TrSP says:

Dustbin of history. who is he going to meet there almost every Pakistani Politician lounging in the trash can.

  3. observer (UK) says:

Sheikh Rasheed must be wondering why Pakistanis acquire dual nationality. Pakistan has lost its credibility due to poor governance, rampant corruption and terrorism both on the international borders and in urban areas.

Sheikh Rasheed was detained for nearly five hours and his possessions including his mobile phone was confiscated. His association with DPC may have been a factor. May be he did not declare how much dollars he was taking with him. The US customs would allow money but it must be declared.

Sheikh must have known by now how much respect a Pakistani passport commands in other countries.

    • truth bites says:

tend to disagree, he was targetted for his comments against USA not for green passport! A UK passport holder of Pakistani origin will get the same treatment.

      • observer (UK) says:

        Incorrect.
There are many who are against the policies of the USA and visit United States. Similarly, there are many Pakistani nationals who are critical of the UK are allowed to enter into the country. The British passport holder of Pakistani origin is not questioned or detained because of his colour when he or she visits European countries.
Sheikh Rasheed has been very active lately to attend DPC and the US authorities may have found some interesting phone numbers from his mobile.
