WASHINGTON - The Executive Director of Kashmiri American Council, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, who was produced before a US court on Wednesday, has been released on USD 100,000 bond.
According to KMS, Dr Fai, who appeared before the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, for a detention hearing on Wednesday, was released and placed under home detention.
Magistrate Judge John Anderson rejected the argument of a US prosecutor, who claimed that Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, 62, represented a flight risk and should be kept in jail. Fai, a native of Kashmir, was arrested last week.
At a federal court hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, the judge ruled that Fai must post $100,000 in bond and he required detention at Fai's home in Virginia, along with electronic monitoring.
Fai's travel is restricted to the Washington, D.C., area, John Anderson ruled from the bench at the end of the 30-minute hearing.
Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai’s arrest had triggered protest demonstrations all over Kashmir. All Hurriyet leaders had expressed concern over his arrest demanding his immediate release.
Dr Fai has been strongly advocating the Kashmiris right to self-determination for the last 35-years.
