Seven shot dead by police during Malawi protests

Bullets

BLANTYRE - Seven people were shot dead by police trying to quell violent anti-government demonstrations in the northern city of Mzuzu, a rights activist told AFP on Thursday.
"I can confirm seven people were shot by live bullets by police yesterday. Right now we are at the mortuary at the main government hospital here in Mzuzu," said rights activist Moses Mkandawire. "We are taking over the whole responsibility to bury our colleagues," he said.
"The police are not doing anything." Mkandawire is director of the rights group Church and Society, run by the Livingstonia Synod of the Presbyterian Church, one of the largest charities in northern Malawi.
